Title: A qualitative evaluation of influential factors in promoting successful involvement of consumers in research.

Aims: To evaluate the influential factors that promote successful involvement of consumers in NHS research.

Research project description: Retrospective study of a research project which successfully involved consumers. Participants were interviewed (consumers, researchers, commissioners), documents analysed. Data was analysed to extract key themes which influenced project's success.

Designing the research instruments
(eg questionnaires, patient information sheets)
Planning the research

Description of public involvement in research stages: We conducted a focus group a the beginning of the project to share our ideas with consumer representatives interested in the consumer involvement concept.

Training and support provided for either members of the public or researchers involved in the project:

Examples of ways the public have made a difference to the research project: Consumers shaped the aim of the research, came up with the key questions to address and through focus group discussions contributed to the design of the interview schedule.

Evaluating the impact of public involvement in the research:

Details of publications or reports resulting from the research: Findings are still being analysed and a number of articles are being written for publication.
