University Hospitals Bristol is a research active NHS Foundation Trust, consisting of 5 clinical divisions spanning 9 hospitals in central Bristol. All divisions are research active, and our specialities include research into cardiovascular disease, nutrition, cancer and haematology trials, emergency medicine, ophthalmology, rheumatology and paediatrics.

Public involvement in research

All our research groups (which involve collaborations between University Hospitals Bristol and the local universities of Bristol and the West of England) are required to involve patients/public in their research at the appropriate level, including at the grant application stage. Rheumatology has a research advisory group including several research partners. Both NIHR Biomedical Research units also have set up Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) groups for different aspects of their work. We are currently collecting information for a database of PPI activities across our Trust, in order to better link people, especially those new to research or PPI. We are members of Bristol Health Partners, and are a stakeholder in People and Research West of England.
