2012 Conference

Abstract: In this interactive poster display, we present some of the current issues around training and support for public involvement in research and invite you to submit your experiences and views.

We are aware that this is an area where many centres are looking for support and guidance to develop appropriate approaches. This is one of the most persistent issues we hear about from our stakeholders. While a number of training and support initiatives are taking place across the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and further afield, this provision is piecemeal and ad hoc, not always well matched to people’s learning and development needs and often lacking resource commitment for longer term sustainability. There are risks of wasted resource through duplication of effort, lack of coordination, continuity and sustainability, and failure to fully address people’s needs.

INVOLVE has an interest in supporting learning and development for public involvement in research and, as part of our work this year, we are exploring how a co-ordinated approach across the NIHR might look and how this approach could work.

At this conference, we are interested to find out:

  1. What training/learning and support opportunities are being provided to support patients, service users and carers in their PPI work and how useful these opportunities are.
  2. Where are the gaps in this training/learning and support and what measures would help those involved in PPI work be better supported in future research projects?

We want the views of:

  • service users/carers
  • researchers at all stages of their career pathway
  • those with responsibility for implementing patient and public involvement in research (senior directors, PPI leads/facilitators and other research support staff).

This is an interactive poster display, please visit us and fill in your brief questionnaire and post it in the relevant collection box. Or come and talk to us and we will help you put your views forward. The interactive part of this poster will close at lunch on day two.

We will summarise the feedback in Session 6.6 Workshop- Learning and Support: Next Steps. The feedback we receive will support the other work we are doing to explore an NIHR-wide approach to learning and development, including the INVOLVE-led stakeholder workshop in January 2013.
