This paper is a reflection on the issues that have arisen in three projects where older people were involved in the research at different levels, from sources of data to independent researchers. The authors conclude that there is a need to develop a model of involvement that is shaped by philosophical, ethical and professional debates about partnership. This model could then be translated into practice, particularly in terms of how involvement is facilitated.
