Title: A study to identify the research priorities of community midwives.

Aims: To identify the research priorities of community midwives in South London.

Research designs used:
Other: Nominal group technique, (a priority setting technique involving consultation and questionnaires)

Methods used to collect data:
Focus groups
Validated instruments eg Outcome measures
Questionnaire survey

Research project description: Community midwives from 8 Trusts in South London attended a priority setting meeting along with the research team (including the team's consumer rep). Priorities generated were then rated by 125 midwives and 23 consumers. These ratings, literature review and other work resulted a ranked list of priorities.

Description of public involvement in research stages: A representative of the National Childbirth Trust became a full member of the research team and was involved in all aspects of undertaking the research. She also provided access to other consumers who answered questionnaires.

Examples of ways the public have made a difference to the research project: 1. Facilitation of access to consumers, whose views were a central part of the research findings. 2. Provided a strong consumer voice throughout the research process.

Evaluating the impact of public involvement in the research:

Details of publications or reports resulting from the research: Poster presented at a conference. One paper in preparation.
