Description
The Public Involvement in Research Group (PIRG) forms part of the Centre for Research in Primary and Community Care (CRIPACC) at the University of Hertfordshire. The PIRG offers a service to researchers in higher education and other institutions, bringing a lay perspective to research studies.
Public involvement in research
The aim of the PIRG is to contribute the direct voice of the service user’s experience and understanding of the NHS and social systems to relevant research studies. The PIRG has been involved, and continues to be involved in various research projects in a wide variety of roles covering all aspects of the research cycle. These include: –
- How best to recruit participants
- Writing clear participant information sheets and consent forms
- Commenting on patient information sheets, questionnaires and consent forms
- Representing the lay view on management and steering groups
- Acting as co-researchers, assisting in recruitment, helping to gain consent, chairing focus groups
- Reviewing reports and documentation
- Making suggestions for dissemination of results
- Participation in the dissemination of results
- Discussing ideas for research as grant applications are developed
The group also provides the service user perspective within health and social care educational programmes. This has included the Masters in Clinical Research programme and the PIRG are active co-presenters on the Patient and Public Involvement in Research module at the University of Hertfordshire
