Title: The loss of family knowledge in Alzheimer's Disease.

Project timescale: From 01 July, 2002 to 01 September, 2003
(Added to website on: 10 June, 2003 - Date last updated: 20 April, 2007)

Source of funding:
Research and Development Small Project Grant

Aims: To investigate if people with Alzheimers Disease do systematically forget the names of family members whose names were learned late (e.g. children) and replace them with the names of relatives that were learned early (eg. parents/siblings etc).

Research designs used:
Cohort Study

Methods used to collect data:
Questionnaire survey

Research project description: A family member of the patient will be asked to give the names of family members (parents/grandparents/siblings/children/grandchildren) and some semantic information about people. The patient will be asked to recall the same information and then checked for their ability to recognise the names.

Stages at which the public were involved:
Planning the research
Designing the research instruments
(eg questionnaires, patient information sheets)

Description of public involvement in research stages: The user/carer focus group was consulted in the early stages of the research design. The group will meet regularly and at an appropriate stage will be asked about analysis, dissemination and implementation of results.

Training and support provided for either members of the public or researchers involved in the project:

Examples of ways the public have made a difference to the research project: The phrasing used on the questionnaire was altered following user/carer input. A new briefer information sheet was developed.

Evaluating the impact of public involvement in the research:

Details of publications or reports resulting from the research: No Articles currently available

Was/is your project user controlled: Not Known
