Research designs used:
Study of views/experiences
Other: Development of QoL measure

Methods used to collect data:
Focus groups
Interviews
Validated instruments eg Outcome measures
Questionnaire survey

Research project description: This study is multi-stage. First in two postal surveys, we are assessing the prevalence of faecal incontinence and the use of related aids and services. Second, quantitative interviews will be used to identify the impact of incontinence on quality of life and to generate content for a self-completion questionnaire. Finally the questionnaire will be tested and validated.

Stages at which the public were involved:
Managing the research
Designing the research instruments
(eg questionnaires, patient information sheets)
Prioritising topic areas
Planning the research
Other: These are the areas to date; it is likely that consumers will also be involved at later stages

Description of public involvement in research stages: Priority was set by NACC and lay members were involved in appraisal of competing research proposals. The project steering group is involved in project monitoring and management.

Training and support provided for either members of the public or researchers involved in the project:

Examples of ways the public have made a difference to the research project: To date, consumer members of steering group have been involved in consultation regarding questionnaire content, thus ensuring relevance and content validity.

Evaluating the impact of public involvement in the research:

Details of publications or reports resulting from the research: None to date - will be obtainable from me as project contact in due course.
