2010 Conference

Abstract:

Learning to Improve the Management of Back Pain in the Community (LIMBIC) is a project funded by the Health Foundation and hosted by Bournemouth University’s School of Health and Social Care. It has aimed to develop ways of sharing best practice and engage all parties within primary health care in open communication via eight half-day workshops. This involved nine general practice teams and their patient representatives as well as researchers and clinical experts.

Practice teams worked as groups looking at services and testing ways of establishing improvements in service provision using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles. This incorporated receptionists, GPs, nurses, patients and managers. There was also a variety of talks from health professionals along with activities that engaged all.

As the project drew to a close the teams and the researchers gathered together to make a film about their experience, carrying out activities which caught the flavour and vibrancy of the project in a DVD called A Day at the Races. The DVD captures the project from a variety of professional and service user perspectives.

Steve Williams, one of the patient representatives will give a brief introduction to the DVD. Steve says: “I personally found the project of enormous benefit and have gained knowledge, understanding and skills to manage my condition a lot more positively, enabling and empowering me to have a vastly different outlook in this area.”
