2014 Conference

Abstract: The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) programme supports regionally derived, applied research projects in health services and social care in England. RfPB projects relate to day-to-day NHS practice in topic areas identified by clinicians and academics, often in partnership with service users. Since 2006, the programme has provided funding for over 600 projects, 40% of which are now complete and have reported their findings. The James Lind Alliance brings patients, carers and clinicians together to identify and prioritise topics for research, thereby ensuring that health research focuses on what matters to both patients and clinicians. Although RfPB research topics are identified by researchers themselves, a number of RfPB projects have addressed areas which have been prioritised by the James Lind Alliance, such as in the areas of asthma, balance, dementia, eczema, schizophrenia, sight loss and urinary incontinence.

This poster will provide an overview of research areas funded through the RfPB programme, particularly in relation to topics prioritised by the James Lind Alliance. We will identify a few projects as examples, to report how patients and the public were actively involved in research funded by the programme and summarise the main findings of research, which can be used to inform clinical practice.
