2014 Conference

Abstract: This poster will present early results from a piece of Action Research, set up to examine the extent of engagement for staff and patients in National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) research at six Trusts within Cheshire and Merseyside. Engagement in research is a keyperformance indicator of the NIHR (Department of Health (DH) 2011). Networks provide the infrastructure for conducting research in the NHS, which allows patients to benefit from new and better treatments, and gives them the opportunity to participate in research studies (DH 2010).

The term ‘Engagement’ refers to the integration of research related activity at all strategic, managerial and operational activities of the Trust. Baseline evidence from the study showed that research is not considered a priority in spite of an appreciation of its importance, and that there is considerable scope for increasing the awareness and accessibility to research for both staff and patients.
