2014 Conference

Abstract: This poster presents a study completed by the NHS research governance service for Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset on the exclusion of non-English speakers from 87 research studies granted NHS approval between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2011. Using a qualitative content and theme analysis the study found that almost half (47%) excluded non-English speakers. The researchers gave a variety of reasons with lack of funding being the most commonly cited. Almost a quarter of the researchers gave no reasons for excluding non-English speakers.

The study concluded that more effort should be made to ensure that non-English speakers are routinely included in research studies. Clear and legitimate reasons must be provided whenever specific groups are excluded. A key factor is consideration of the needs of non-English speakers during the planning and development of research proposals. This will ensure funding issues can be addressed, enabling adequate provision to be made to include non-English speakers. In addition, Research Ethics Committees need to ensure this issue is considered.

The presentation will be supplemented by the findings of an audit of research studies receiving research governance approval by the same service between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2013. We are hoping this audit will provide the opportunity to make comparisons with earlier findings, identify any changes over the past two years, and inform potential  research into possible barriers. An understanding of barriers to including non-English speakers may help INVOLVE further develop its diversity and inclusion resources for researchers.
