2014 Conference

Abstract: The National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR) collectspatient information from hospitals across the UK to try and improve the quality of careand outcomes for patients that have heart problems and treatments. NICOR publishes reports every year from all of its audits and wants to ensure that it is providing information to patients and their families in a meaningful, accessible and useful way. In May 2014 NICOR held a Patient and Public Open Day to explore how patients and the public appreciate audit data, what their information needs are and how NICOR can present information in a way that is accessible, transparent and useful. In addition, NICOR aims to invite all attendees to become involved in a variety of activities within NICOR’s emerging research strategy. Such activities include sitting on NICOR’s various audit steering groups, reviewing research applications submitted to NICOR by external researchers for use of the audit data, reviewing publications for research and advising our researchers on their research plans.

This work is important in developing and enhancing NICOR’s audit and research work in partnership with patients and the public. This presentation will focus upon lessons learned from the Patient and Public Open Day and how we have altered NICOR’s activities and processes as a result.
