2006 Conference

Why?

The NHS often struggles to involve both individual patients and the general public satisfactorily in its decision making. It knows it can learn from other countries which historically have concentrated more on community participation.

What?

Geoff Meads and his team at Warwick University have researched seven countries of Latin America over the past three years. Each has its own system for involving local people in health care. Geoff will describe these very briefly and then set out the main lessons for the United Kingdom.

How?

Through the photographs of the local health services in Latin America it will be clear that local people can be involved simultaneously in developing together both health services and education programmes. Geoff will conclude by indicating the opportunities and the risks this involvement brings.
