Abstract:

Target audience:

Clinicians/academics and health professionals who are already engaged/interested in patient and public involvement (PPI) in research through multi-agency working and any patient/carer interested in learning about our work.

Aim of the workshop:

To identify challenges and advantages of multi-agency working in relation to PPI in research

Objectives:

Presenters will explain:

  1. the problems that researchers were experiencing in the Leicester, Northampton and Rutland (LNR) region before this initiative
  2. how the forum work started to come together
  3. how patients and the public are involved in the steering and development of the forum
  4. how as a forum we manage differing PPI agenda’s (those of the Research Design Service, Collaborative Leadership of Applied Health Research and Care, Comprehensive Local Research Network, Clinical Trial Unit and the voluntary sector interested in research and PPI
  5. how we have managed opportunities of diverse working
  6. how we deal with logistical issues such as database sharing, tapping in to existing patient groups
  7. dealing with the challenges of funding.

Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop attendees will:

  1. better understand how one region is working together to co-ordinate PPI in research
  2. better understand how PPI in research is implemented to a greater level across different agencies.

Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care - Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland (CLAHRC LNR) Theme Manager for Early Detection Bill O' Leary has a long term interest in patient and public involvement (PPI) through his work at the NHS Clinical Governance Support Team and the National Diabetes Support Team. At the latter he was part of a team responsible for producing a number of toolkits to support patient involvement in improving diabetes care. He is currently the CLAHRC LNR theme manager for early detection.

Pandya-Wood ~ Raksha

Senior Research Fellow and Regional Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in Research Lead, National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Design Service East Midlands (RDS EM). Raksha Pandya-Wood oversees all PPI work of the RDS EM across the region. This includes: managing the reviewing process for pre protocol work bursaries; delivering the region’s PPI workshops aimed at researchers; arranging input from lay people for the Scientific Committee; and providing advice and support on PPI in research bids. Raksha is writing up her PhD which used interviews and the Delphi Technique to explore the impact of PPI in cancer research usability.

Richardson ~ Emma

Research and Development Worker, Carers Federation Ltd Emma Richardson gained her doctorate in 2009 from the Institute of Genetics at the University of Nottingham, with her research focusing on Ribonucleic acid (RNA) localisation in vertebrate oocytes. She worked in medical communications for 15 months before joining the Carers Federation Ltd in January 2010 to lead their newly formed Research Forum.
