2006 Conference

We wished to compare the research priorities of both people with ulcerative colitis and health professionals involved in the care of UC patients. Statements were generated by patients using in-depth interviews and focus groups. Q sort packs were developed in which individuals rank their preferences and ranked statements were factor analysed to identify subjective perspectives about research priorities.

Five perspectives were identified; Factor A represented views mainly shared by patients who prioritised topics related to care, Factor B views were only health professionals who prioritised scientific topics and the remaining Factors had mixed patients and professionals views.

Participants will learn more about the strengths of the Q sort methodology to identify subjective perspectives, such as patients’ research priorities. It gives participants control over the classification process and is relatively free from researcher influence.

It is essential that the full breadth of patients’ views is represented. We found consensus between some patients and health professionals, whereas others held polarised views. The Q sort has identified perspectives where there is concordance and mismatch and it is a useful way of exploring opinions about research priorities.
