Abstract:

This article reports on the findings from a literature review that aimed to identify the impact of patient and public involvement (PPI) on NHS healthcare services. The review found a broad range of impacts that can be broadly divided into impact on service planning and development, on information development and dissemination and on the attitudes of service users and providers. The authors also highlight the limits of the evidence available, in particular a lack of economic analysis on the costs involved and the poor quality of reporting. They argue that the evidence base needs to be significantly strengthened.
