Project timescale: From 01 November, 2000 to 01 October, 2001
(Added to website on: 04 May, 2001 - Date last updated: 20 April, 2007)

Source of funding:
Gardener Bequest, University Hospital of South Manchester

Aims: 1.To explore treatment decision-making role preference in a sample of patients with lung cancer. 2. To identify priority information needs in the sample. 3. To develop a scale for identifying priority information needs and to validate a tool for exploring decisional role preference in lung cancer patients. 4. To explore perceived facilitators and barriers to attaining preferred decisional role in the sample.

Research designs used:
Study of views/experiences

Methods used to collect data:
Interviews

Research project description: The study will explore lung cancer patients' preferences regarding participation in treatment decision making. It will also seek to identify those areas in which patients are most desirous of receiving information regarding their lung cancer. An Information Needs Questionnaire for use in future quantitative work (after Degner et al 1998) will be developed as a result of the data collected and the transferability of a set of sort cards originally designed for use with breast cancer patients (Degner et al 1997) will be assessed.

Stages at which the public were involved:
Planning the research
Managing the research
Designing the research instruments
(eg questionnaires, patient information sheets)
Writing about the research eg
publications, newsletters

Description of public involvement in research stages: The patient representative will be involved in the Project Advisory Group. This will give guidance on the conduct of the study and the development of instruments. It will also be a source of guidance in the event of problems arising during the project.
