Aims: This study aims to compare passive dissemination of information materials with an active self-management group for patients with ulcerative colitis.

Research project description: This is an RCT of two approaches to delivery of education and support, to patients with UC, in an outpatient setting. Primary outcomes are emotional and social well-being as measured by quality of life scales. An economic evaluation is included.

Description of public involvement in research stages: The topic was identified through focus groups to set research priorities. Consumer members of the steering group have contributed to the definition of content and structure of the self-management programme, and to the design of patient recruitment procedures.

Examples of ways the public have made a difference to the research project: Consumers have ensured relevance to patients of the content and methods of the self management programme.
